What is IELTS?

IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System. Jointly conducted by the British Council, IDP, and Cambridge University Press & Assessment, it is the world's most widely recognised English proficiency exam, accepted across 140+ countries.

The exam tests four core skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The total duration is approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes. Scores are reported on a 9-band scale, from Band 1 (non-user) to Band 9 (expert). Most universities and immigration programmes require somewhere between Band 6 and Band 7.5.

There are two versions of the test.

  • The Academic module is for students applying to undergraduate or postgraduate programmes abroad.
  • The General Training module is for those seeking work visas, migration, or secondary education.

Both are valid, both are accepted, your purpose decides which one you take.

In India, the IELTS exam fee is ₹18,000 for both Academic and General Training. The exam is conducted multiple times every month, in both paper-based and computer-based formats.

IELTS Exam Format

The IELTS exam assesses your English skills across four modules—Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. While the first three modules take place on the same day, the Speaking test is conducted separately on a date of your choice.

There are two types of the IELTS test :

General Training: IELTS General Training is ideal for those planning to apply for PR, work abroad, or relocate to countries like Canada, the UK, Australia, or New Zealand. It focuses on everyday communication skills needed for immigration and employment pathways.

Academic Training: IELTS Academic is designed for students aiming to pursue undergraduate or postgraduate studies abroad. It evaluates academic English skills and is accepted by over 10,000 institutions across more than 140 countries.

The IELTS examination provides test takers with the opportunity to select between two available options as outlined below:

IELTS Module Formats

The listening module is comprised of four sections, each containing 10 questions.

  • In each section, a recording will be presented for your attentive listening.
  • The audio recordings will feature individuals who are native speakers discussing a wide range of
subjects. Following each recording, there will be corresponding questions.
  • The question types primarily encompass Fill in the blanks, Complete the flow chart/Map, and
    multiple choice.
  • It is imperative that you provide accurate responses to all of the questions without omitting
    any of them.

The format of the listening module is similar for both the General Training and Academic Training
versions. The duration of this module is roughly 30 minutes, with an additional 10 minutes allocated
for the purpose of transferring responses to the answer sheet.

The reading module involves the assessment of your ability to be able to read, analyze and interpret written texts that covers three sections with distinct forms of questions.

It will have a total of 40 questions in the whole module.

The source for the texts is based on a variety of topics for general interest and academic versions.

The question types include:

  • Multiple choice
  • True/False/Not Given
  • Matching headings to paragraphs
  • Filling in sentences or summaries
  • Tables or diagrams completion

To maximize your score, read through all the texts carefully and answer all the questions to the best of your knowledge.

The format is a little different for the Academic and the General Training type:

Academic: Focuses on detailed, factual, or argument-based passages from books, journals, or magazines.

General Training: Includes texts related to everyday life, such as advertisements, workplace instructions, and general interest content.

The writing module is to evaluate your ability to consume ideas and express it clearly in a written format. It includes two tasks that must be completed within an hour.

Task 1:

  • Academic Version: it includes writing a report based on a visual representation of data (e.g., charts, graphs, tables).
  • General Training Version: This has a letter writing part (formal, semi-formal, or informal) addressing a specific situation or request.

Task 2:

  • Write an essay expressing your opinion on a given topic, discussing an issue, or providing solutions to a problem.

Key Points:

  • Task 2 carries more weight than Task 1 in scoring.
  • Responses should meet the required word count: 150 words for Task 1 and 250 words for Task 2.
  • Focus on using clear, organized ideas with examples to support your arguments.

Duration: 60 minutes

This module tests your ability to speak fluently and confidently in spoken English. It will be carried out through a face-to-face interview with an IELTS examiner.

Structure:

  • Introduction and Interview: Answer general questions about yourself, your family, hobbies, or studies.
  • Cue Card Task: Speak for 1–2 minutes on a given topic after a minute of preparation. Follow-up questions may be asked.
  • Discussion: Discuss abstract or complex ideas related to the cue card topic, demonstrating your ability to analyze and express opinions.

Tips:

  • Focus on fluency, coherence, pronunciation, and vocabulary while maintaining natural communication.
  • Don’t worry about your accent; clarity and communication are more important.

Duration: 11–14 minutes

It depends on your current English level. Most students prepare for 4 to 8 weeks. If you're starting from scratch or targeting a high band (7.5+), 2–3 months of structured preparation is recommended.

If you're applying to a university abroad, go for Academic. If you're applying for a work visa, migration (especially to Canada or Australia), or secondary education, General Training is the right choice. Both versions test the same four skills, but the Reading and Writing sections differ in content.

Absolutely. Our online IELTS coaching is as comprehensive as our offline batches, same study material, same mock tests, same feedback system. It's a strong option for working professionals or students with fixed schedules.

It varies by destination and programme. Canadian PR typically requires an overall band of 6.0. Most UK universities require 6.5 to 7.0. Top universities and selective immigration programmes often ask for 7.5 or higher. Always check with your institution or visa category directly.

IELTS recommends candidates be at least 16 years old. There is no upper age limit. Candidates under 18 need parental or guardian ID on test day.

You can retake IELTS as many times as you need. There's no restriction on the number of attempts. However, since each attempt costs ₹18,000, proper preparation before the first attempt is always the smarter route.
